Co-op Principle #4 - Autonomy and Independence
|
|
Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their owner-members. If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their owner-members and maintain their cooperative autonomy and unique identity. |

A key takeaway with this principle is the focus on democratic control by the members. We have begun to give this more attention by referring to our members as “Owners”. We recognize that owners have a stake in the future and success of the LBGCo-op. We are self reliant, independent, and make our own decisions regarding the direction and policies of the Co-op to ensure it operates in a manner that serves our needs and does not compromise our identity. We rely on our own governance structure with an elected board and are not controlled by external entities or regulations as other business models do. The LBGCo-op is empowered to define our organizational goals and set policies accordingly. Owners need to be involved to ensure its democratic structure functions effectively.

Fun ways to spend the day with Mom in Long Beach
|

The spotlight will be on Long Beach for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Our vibrant coastal city will host 11 events which include Beach Volleyball, Coastal Rowing, Target Shooting, Sport Climbing, Sailing, Water Polo, Artistic Swimming, Marathon Swimming, Canoe Sprint, Rowing, and Handball. Long Beach will certainly be the hot spot as our city has hosted the Olympics previously (1932 and 1984) and is very experienced in organizing large events. The venues of Marine Stadium and Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier will be center stage once again. Interesting trivia, in addition to producing notable athletes such as Billie Jean King, Misty May-Treanor, and Russell Westbrook, alumni from Wilson High School has participated in every U.S. Summer Olympics since 1952. |

This is an incredible time for Long Beach to showcase all it has to offer and the LBGCo-op is going to be ready, front and center. The location of our new home is right in the heart of the Anaheim corridor make-over, close to public transportation, and is expected to be complete in time for the Olympics. |

Join Us in June - Supporting The Little Lions

2025 is the second International Year of Co-ops under the theme,
“Co-operatives Build a Better World.” On
June 15th the Long Beach Grocery Co-op will kick it off by helping
make a better world for a lot of adorable kittens by supporting the Little Lion
Foundation. The Little Lion Foundation is hosting a “Cake Swap” fundraising event
at the Sports Basement. We will have a table at this event to provide support to
this organization and provide information to those in attendance on the benefits
of a grocery cooperative and how to become an owner of the LBGCo-op. To attend the

The Rise of A Community Owned Market, by David J. Thompson. This book examines the cooperative movement in California through the story of the Santa Monica Co-op. Their history begins with four founders in a garage, how others played a role, how they financed it, and how they grew it. Santa Monica Co-op eventually became what is now Co+opportunity. The store opened in 1974, growing from 20 members to now having over 11,000 members. It is one of the most successful consumer cooperatives in the USA. |

May 6th we are hosting our initial volunteer orientation meeting. If you are unable to attend there will be regularly scheduled volunteer meetings each month.
