5 Simple Ways to Start Eating Healthier This Year

1. Eat More Color

Add some color to your brown and beige diet! The easiest way to get all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you need is to eat a variety of colorful fruits and veggies. Try to mix and match multiple colors within each meal.

Tip: You can never go wrong with more GREENS!

2. Cut Back on Salt

Most people eat way too much salt, especially if they're eating boxed, canned, frozen, or prepared foods. Check the nutrition label for sodium and try to keep yourself under 2,300 mg per day- that's equal to about 1 teaspoon of salt!

3. Buy Smaller Plates

Many of us were raised to "clean your plate" or "finish your dish," but in the last 50 years, the average plate size increased 20-25%! Big plates means you're probably serving big portions. Downsize your dinnerware to help control how much you eat.

4. Just One Dessert

You don't have to eliminate your favorite sweets completely. Choose one indulgence per day and stick to just one serving. Also, invest in some healthy snacks to munch on between meals.

Snack ideas: carrots & hummus, apples & peanut butter, low-sugar oatmeal

5. Switch from Soda to Seltzer

A 20 oz bottle of Coke contains 65 grams of sugar, or 16 teaspoons! One bottle is 2.5x your recommended daily intake of sugar. If you still want that cool, refreshing bubbly sensation, then switch to seltzer water or carbonated water. It's an easy way to cut a huge chunk of empty calories from your diet.
